A new study published in Translational Psychiatry provides evidence that chronic heroin addiction impairs the neural networks responsible for creative thinking. The findings indicate that the brains of individuals with opioid dependence struggle to coordinate the generation and evaluation of new ideas.
We need a new paradigm for addiction that puts psychology first and recognizes its heterogeneity. Only then will we see that for some, addiction is a form of deliberate self-harm.
