Detroit fell under 200 murders for the first time in six decades in 2025, Police Chief Todd Bettison said, marking three straight years of decline.
Homicides decreased 18.7% from 2024 and 34.5% from 2023, with 165 murders recorded -- the lowest number since 1965. This is the first time in roughly 60 years that Detroit has seen fewer than 200 murders. Nonfatal shootings dropped to 447 in 2025 from 607 the previous year. In 2020, the city recorded more than 1,000 nonfatal shootings.
Detroit records its lowest murder rate since 1965 with overall crime declining, including a 34.5% drop in homicides and reductions in nonfatal shootings and carjackings. New community-focused safety initiatives are being launched.
Hundreds gathered on Tuesday evening outside of Chita's Nefertiti bar, where a 28-year-old man was shot to death, and his brother was stabbed multiple times over the weekend.
