Major winter storm vs. Arctic cold: Atmospheric battle to have big impact on Boston weather forecast
A monster winter storm will clash with Arctic air, with major implications for the weather forecast in Massachusetts.
Forecasters on Tuesday expressed fears that an ice storm arriving late this week and into the weekend could weigh down power lines, sending them crashing and causing widespread power outages. Temperatures will be slow to warm in many areas, meaning ice that forms on roads and sidewalks might stick around, forecasters say.
So far, the National Weather Service has placed Oceana, Muskegon and Ottawa counties under a Winter Storm Warning that goes into effect at midnight tonight and lasts through 10 a.m. Wednesday. Heavy snow is expected. Most areas in that three-county range will see between 3-8 inches of snow. But some areas will see anywhere from 9 to 12 inches.
ATLANTA — The ingredients are aligning for the first major winter storm of 2026. The massive system is expected to bring rain, snow, freezing rain and sleet from Texas across the Deep South into the Mid-Atlantic starting Friday and lasting through Sunday.
Alabama is facing the prospect of a significant winter storm over the weekend. The National Weather Service said there is an increasing potential for parts of the state to get snow, or worse, freezing rain, starting as soon as Friday night and lasting into Sunday night.
A winter storm watch was issued by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 4:50 a.m. valid from Wednesday noon until Thursday 10 a.m. for Warren, McKean, Potter, Elk, Cameron and Clearfield counties.

KALAMAZOO, MI – Mother Nature has thrown a wrench into the hoops scene around Kalamazoo. Due to accumulating snowfall, poor road conditions and freezing temperatures, several of Tuesday’s Kalamazoo-area high school boys and girls basketball games have either been postponed or cancelled.
The season’s most extreme storm so far is set to lash the eastern half of the United States with damaging ice and heavy snow late this week. It’s all being fed by a brutal blast of Arctic air that’s bringing the season’s coldest air to date.
