I’m about 3/4 of the way through this underpainting of a Bartzella peony. Once the entire canvas is covered, I’ll repaint it in a second finishing pass (and sometimes a third). Most are familiar with monochromatic underpaintings (such as grisaille). However, prominent 19th century academic painters also used a full-color method known as ébauche as the primary (or first) pass. I prefer this method as it gives me a more immediate overall feel for the painting, particularly color harmony. And in my

Traditionally, artists ground their own paint. This precision work was always done in studio settings. The invention of the collapsible metal tube enabled artists store paint and carry it outside - allowing them to paint “en plein aire” which was the beginning of development of Impressionism. Another important invention that supported the rise of Impressionists? The collapsible easel! To view more of my work: www.dyanpadgett.com #Impressionism #oilpainting #art #paint #pleinair | Dyan J. Traveling with oils is too complicated and time consuming. I like to travel light with watercolors and pens and just create flowing, imaginative pieces while on the road. It’s very freeing and fun to not have the pressure of a large oil painting to complete. To view more of my work: www.dyanpadgett.com #travelart #travelartist #watercolor #sketch #floralart | Dyan J. That one art school rule I always break? “Never paint the background in first.” The rationale of my instructor was that by painting the background in first, it will give your subject matter sharp edges, flattening it. However, painting in the background is quite literally the first thing I do on every painting. Why? As a still life painter, the background is often the largest color space on my canvas - so I want it covered, not left white. A large amount of white canvas can affect my color and v

I know. I know. I don’t post consistently. My content is all over the place - no real strategy. I’m often “off-brand”. No social media content creator working for me - just me and my phone. And as a consequence, the algorithm gods aren’t fond of me. But that’s ok. Because I’m busy living a full life. So I do what I can when I can. And I’m very grateful for those of you that choose to come along for the ride despite my social media ineptitude. #artlife #oilpainting #realism #floralart | Dyan J. P

It’s difficult to be simultaneously filled with rage and anxiety on a daily basis. But that’s where I’m at. My Minneapolis art studio remains closed as I prioritize my own mental health and safety and that of loved ones. But I’ll be back to painting flowers soon. Because now more than ever, the world needs beauty and kindness. #Minneapolis #minnesotastrong | Dyan J. Padgett Fine Art
