Phenolphthalein is colorless in acidic solutions (pH < 7) It turns pink in basic (alkaline) solutions (pH > 8.2) When you pour a clear base (like sodium hydroxide) into the beaker containing the indicator, the pH rises — the liquid turns bright pink. Then, when you add an acidic solution (like hydrochloric acid), the pH drops again — the color fades
