Erst siebzehn Jahre später bekam „Candide“ eine zweite Chance: Hershy Kay, Hugh Wheeler und Stephen Sondheim machten aus der Operette ein einaktiges Musical – mit neuem Libretto, neuen Texten und fast unveränderter Musik. Die 1974er Broadway-Fassung wurde ein Triumph mit 740 Vorstellungen und mehreren Tony Awards
